Educational Profile

Churches have played vital role in establishment of educational institutes in Dominica. The Roman Catholic and Methodist churches were directly involved in providing elementary and secondary education in 1850s; the nuns of the Roseau Convent started classes for a limited number of girls in the city. In 1893 Dominica Grammar School for boys started by the government. The Roman Catholic St. Mary's Academy opened its door to boys in 1932. The Methodist church started schools for girls.

The public education system started in Dominica in 1960s. In the mid-1980s, all but two of the nation's sixty-six primary schools were operated by the government. Dominica's six secondary schools were equally divided between government and religious institutions. Dominica also had a two-year technical college in which 120 students were enrolled in 1984.

Dominican children start attending school at the age of 5. Primary education (1 to 8th grade) starts for a child in Dominica at the age of 5 and ends at 15. Children who successfully complete primary education get enrolment into Secondary schools for studying 9th and 10th grade. Technical training is available at Technical Institutes.
